Counterfeit Rolex watches have become disturbingly good. The old giveaways — ticking seconds hands, crooked printing — are gone from the best fakes, and even experienced buyers get caught. But no counterfeit survives all nine of the checks below. 1. Feel the weight
A genuine Rolex is built from 904L Oystersteel, solid-gold or platinum — dense materials that counterfeiters substitute with lighter alloys. Hold the watch: a real Datejust or Submariner has unmistakable heft. If it feels airy, hollow, or "toylike", stop there. This single check filters out most fakes in five seconds.
2. Watch the seconds hand sweep
A mechanical Rolex movement beats 8 times per second, so the seconds hand appears to glide smoothly around the dial. A hand that ticks once per second means a cheap quartz movement — an instant fail (the only exception is the rare vintage Oysterquartz, which a seller must prove with papers). Better fakes now use sweeping movements too, so passing this test alone proves nothing — failing it proves everything.
3. The cyclops magnification test
The date bubble — the "cyclops" — on a genuine Rolex magnifies the date 2.5 times, so the numeral almost fills the lens. Counterfeits typically manage 1.5x or less: if the date looks small and distant under the bubble, be suspicious. On a real watch the date is also perfectly centred in the window.
4. Inspect the rehaut engraving
Since the mid-2000s, Rolex engraves "ROLEXROLEXROLEX" around the rehaut (the inner ring between dial and crystal), with the serial number at 6 o'clock and a crown at 12. The engraving is machine-perfect: evenly spaced, crisp, and precisely aligned with the minute markers. Fuzzy, shallow, or misaligned rehaut lettering is one of the most reliable fake-spotters on modern references.
5. Find the laser-etched crown at 6 o'clock
Look at the crystal above the 6 o'clock marker with a loupe and angled light: models from 2002 onward carry a nearly invisible laser-etched coronet made of dozens of tiny dots. Counterfeit versions — when present at all — are usually too visible, too large, or etched with crude lines instead of fine dots.
6. Study the dial printing under magnification
Rolex dial work is flawless at 10x magnification: sharp letter edges, even lume application, perfectly aligned indices, no stray ink or dust. Counterfeit dials show blurry text edges, slightly wrong fonts, uneven spacing between letters, or glue traces around markers. Compare the dial text against official photos of the exact same reference — spacing errors jump out quickly.
7. Check the case back
With very few exceptions (some vintage models and the Sea-Dweller Deepsea), Rolex case backs are plain, smooth metal. A clear "exhibition" case back showing the movement, an engraved logo, or hologram stickers on a modern watch are counterfeit hallmarks — genuine Rolex simply doesn't do this.
8. Verify the serial and model numbers
The serial sits between the lugs at 6 o'clock (older models) or on the rehaut (modern), with the model number between the lugs at 12. Genuine engravings are deep, clean, and catch the light like a diamond cut; fakes look acid-etched, sandy, or shallow. Cross-check that the model number matches the configuration — counterfeiters often pair a Submariner case with a Datejust number.
9. Papers, box — and a price reality check
Documentation can be faked too, but its absence at a bargain price tells its own story. A genuine warranty card matches the serial on the watch. And the oldest rule in the market still holds: if the price looks too good to be true, it is. A "new Submariner" at half retail is not a lucky find.
